Plan Grow Do, Self-Development
“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.”Paulo Coelho
Running a business is just as much about your mental ability as it is skills and experience. An athlete can have all the skill in the world but when it comes to winning they need the mental resilience to get up and train every day, twice a day, e.g. Mo Farah runs 135 miles a week by running twice a day.
Self-development can improve your skills allowing you to be adaptable, but it also strengthens your mind and develops a business acumen to survive the feasts and famines of business.
So, put down the ‘Idiots Guide to Sales’ and pick up Simon Sinek’s ‘Start With Why’ or my ‘Funnel Vision: Selling Made Easy’ and take your business forward at the highest level.
But additional to strengthening your mind here are a few more benefits of self-development.
Being able to see what’s in front of you
I’ve talked a lot about the importance of setting goals, but without the clarity of foresight do you know:
- What goals you should be setting?
- How to make them achievable?
This can be tricky to define, simply by its nature it is something you are trying to improve.
I said last week that “Readers make leaders” and it’s especially true when it comes to learning how to build a business.
Taking the first step and reading about how others have built their business can help you discover what is possible. Finding out how they did it will give you ideas on what self-development tasks you can set yourself which in turn will help you create goals.
It forces you out of your comfort zone.
I speak to a lot of business owners who have this sense of belief that the phone will ring all by itself, with a prospect on the other end that’s ready to buy. But it just does not happen. The reason could be that business owners have found their comfort zone selling via social media or their website.
Whichever it is, they refuse to pick up the phone and call prospects. Have you ever felt the same yourself? Is it because calling warm leads no longer works? Or is it because you don’t feel comfortable?
When growing a business, pushing your ability to make sales takes confidence, particularly during our current climate, so you have to be prepared to do whatever it takes.
Applying yourself to your self-development and learning new skills is not just the smart approach but a proven approach.
So, learn from others, read books or seek out one-to-one coaching to grow your confidence and your business at the same time.
So what are the next steps to self development?
Plan, Grow, Do! and I do not just mean my online training courses. If you want to develop yourself to become better, wiser and a more successful both personally and with your business then take these 3 words literally.
Plan where you want to go and the skills that you’ll need to get there.
Grow via self development either by attending courses such as Plan Grow Do, 1-2-1 coaching or even reading books, and thus understand how to drive your business forwards.
And then DO it.
