Reach for the stars and land on the moon. 

Space X has a vision to make humans a multiplanetary species, Google wants to make a self-driving vehicle, and Made In Space mission is to make everything in space be made in space.

These moonshot goals by huge companies might seem so far away from your own expectations. But if someone asked you today what is it you want to achieve? Would you able to tell them? Do you even know yourself what they are? It’s not uncommon for small business owners to fall into self-employment to become a technician without a boss, being an entrepreneur was far from their mindset.

Whether you’re a technician or entrepreneur, read on to find out more about moonshot goals and how they help with sales targets.

“My sales targets are not helping me reach my goals.” 

When your sales targets are not aligned with the main purpose of your business they can seem irrelevant and unachievable. If your sales targets seem further away than when you committed to them is it because you didn’t focus on them daily or is it because they don’t match what you’re trying to achieve with your business? Everyone goes into business for a reason, not just to give an income. Most business owners feel so strongly about something that they start a business in that industry, whether it is doing virtual administration for other business owners or making their energy and light systems efficient. To make your sales targets help you and your business when you’re setting them, check they support your “why”.

“I don’t remember what my sales targets are.”

Did you know neuropsychologists have identified something they call the “generation effect” which in simple terms means we remember something we have generated better than something we have read. Coming back to sales targets this means when your goals are generated by yourself and written down somewhere you get a double whammy generation effect. The first when you create those sales targets and the second by recording those targets. Some people may prefer to get visual and create a vision board, or draw them and some might just need a simple written reminder at the top of their whiteboard. Choose whichever method works for you and use it. Skipping this step can result in confusion of whether you’ve met your targets or not.

“My sales targets are always so boring.”

It’s important to set targets that are SMART– specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. These targets keep you on track by having a laser focus but, at the same time, you want to be excited to grow and learn. I realise this won’t come from knowing that your close rate is just 4%, i.e. needing to make 100 calls/emails to make 4 sales, you also need to understand what’s driving you, so think if money and time were no object what would you do? Make this your moonshot goal. 

It was JFK that said 

“This nation should commit itself to achieve the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” 


He inspired a nation to get a man on the moon and back home again even though he couldn’t say how it would be achieved. This inspiration will keep you driving forward even in tough times.
